Ability versus Aspiration

The Right to Education Act came into force in 2010. However, the trend towards universal elementary education was well in place before that. For example, for the age group 6 to 14, enrollment levels have been high and rising for quite some time. Even as early as 2005-6, the first Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) and an independent household survey commissioned by the Ministry of Human Resource Development around the same time, confirmed that well over 90 per cent children in this age group were enrolled in school. In fact, tracking ASER data over time, we can see that for children (6 to 14) in rural India, enrollment rates have over 95 per cent for over 10 years now. Clarification sought on validity of distance education degrees

Several employers and students have sought clarification from the HRD Ministry on the validity of the degrees in technical education granted by Indira Gandhi National Open University and others in distance education mode since 2001. The requests for clarification comes in wake of a recent Supreme Court verdict which suspended B tech degrees obtained by students from four deemed-to-be universities through various distance education programmes between 2001-2005. Who should undergo the current D.El.Ed course through NIOS?

1. Primary Level Teachers who have passed Class XII with 50% (45% for SC/ST/OBC/PH) or above marks in Class XII but not done D.El.Ed Course.  (If the teachers do not have requisite percentage marks in Class XII, they have to simultaneously register with NIOS for improving the percentage marks.)
